Removing hood lift support

I bought new hood lift supports for a 97 RL. I'm having a hard time removing the part where the ball and socket joint is. The new ones have a metal band where the cup is but the old ones don't. I thought that these just popped out. Anybody have any ideas how to remove them?

Thanks.

I just went ahead and removed the whole assembly, since it's not popping out. I originally thought of reusing the ball thingy but the replacement hood lifts include that part anyway.

The hood lifts are not popping out of the ball joints! You have to replace a whole assembly.

Helpful Thread!

It was really helpful to find the posts in this thread because one of 'ball' parts was stuck in the fender. I nearly rounded it off trying to get it out with a 12mm wrench. After seeing this thread, I tried the other side, which came loose much easier. So, I went back to the driver's side and just reefed on it, hoping for the best (and no slip/round-off) and it broke loose--whew!
