94 opinions? Runs smoth quiet in park, in gear LOUD CLANKING repeating, wont drive

I just bought this Automatic 1994 Legend. It starts up nice and easy and is super quiet and runs like a champ while in PARK.

Soon as I put it in gear there is a Very loud clanking sound, the sound is in pace with the engine rotation. The car does not move in any gears.

The previous owner said they were going down the freeway and out of nowhere the loud noise just started happening and the car would no longer drive.

I am assuming its the transmission alone. but I honestly have never worked on a front wheel drive V6. All the V6/v8 i have worked on were rear wheel drive. I removed the wheels and CV Axles so far.

Keep going. Since the sound is in concert with the engine rotation, we can eliminate the torque converter and the front pump. Sounds like you have a stripped gear on the transmission mainshaft. Totally repairable if you want to tear the trans apart.

Could it also be the Differential / Carrier. Or does what I described also rule that out.

Now that the CV Axles are out. If I start the car in park, its still quiet.

Soon as I put it into gear it still makes the very loud noise, just like before removing them.

I was wondering if its possible to determine if its the transmission or differential by inspecting. I can look inside the differential now that the cv axles are removed.

Think in terms of things that rotate at the same speed the engine does. I've had a partially shattered front pump gear do exactly what you're describing.

here is a youtube video that I just made:

Code:
youtube.com/watch?v=mji10jRKzyo
AND YES! its fine in park then makes a rubbing/roaring sound once I put it into gear. then when i go from reverse to neutral. it kinda sounds like the direction changes. then once i put it in drive and give it gas, the sound goes faster as i give it more gas. then if i goto put it into park its CLAT CLAT CLAT CLAT. like a griding like its not going back into park. so at that point I just kill the ignition.

At about 22 seconds I gave it some more gas which speed up the sound then at 30 seconds into the video is when I put it into park.

My Mood: Relaxed
I'm gonna say it's the input shaft to the diff. We had one do this on a club members legend. The cause is the trans mount wore out and cause the gear input shaft to strip out!

Just a few of my JDM pieces! I'm moding my sedan after the Alpha and the Alpha Touring Honda Legends but with a custom twist to it!
