I have the very same problem with my new legend i picked up last week.
I just took my 94 legend L to a very good import drivetrain mechanic,
he said the torque converter was bad. My legend is new to the family and has a warranty that wont cover the cost if they pull the tranny to diagnose the torque converter and find it to be ok. He says 80% chance itll be bad but he wont know till he sees the evidence. So, if the torque converter ends up to be ok. Im stuck with a 9 hour bill and 65.00 an hour.
I saw him check it with a stethoscope, said there was a bunch of rattlin around in there. Does this sound right ? i have no idea, and dont know if its worth takeing the risk of paying out of pocket to find nothing wrong.
What would you do ?

I am having problems with my Acura (1996 Acura RL 3.5) vibrating when you have the brakes pushed in & the car is in gear reverse/drive. The vibration is very bad in dash & steering wheel. If I am stopped & it is vibrating I can put the car in park or neutral & the vibration goes away. Then I can put it back into reverse/drive & the problem comes back. I have noticed that the RPMS drop down when the car is put into drive/reverse from about 1000 RPM to 635RPM. While holding the brakes I mashed the gas to bring the RPMS up a little & the problem is still there. I know the RPMS should drop some when put into gear but not sure how much or if the problem is somewhere else. Can someone please tell me if they have seen this or a known cure for this problem. I would appreciate anyones help... DOLLARBILL89

My car is having the same problem, according to the mechanic, it is the upper rear transmission mount.

The same vibration underneath the pedals once I accelerate.

Does anybody know where I can get this transmission mount cheaper than 160.00$... please reply--Thanks,

Rob

i'm fighting with it too, since 1,5 years.
but i got no solution yet.
few things i know for sure now, it has nothing to do with:
- bad or worn engine or tranny mounts
- the suspension
- the timing belt or balancer belt
- spark plugs
- tranny lock-up solenoids

what i found out, the extent of this problem is engine/tranny temperature dependent.

for example: when a cold engine/tranny is started up, the vibration is very weak. the more you heat up the engine, the stronger it gets.
then you go for a run on the highway and step on it. i mean going over 120 mph for a while. then you leave the highway and on the next traffic lights the engine/tranny is shaking like hell.
now, when you park your car for about 10 minutes, let it cool down and restart, the vibration is almost gone!
it will come back while you drive again, but not at the extent as before.

i'd like to find out, what the oil temperature in the tranny is. especially after high speed driving. maybe this is the problem.

I have a slightly different vibration problem. At times the car vibrates like crazy (from side-to-side) when I step on the gas between 35-55 mph. But if I take my foot off the gas for a second then hit it again most times the vibration goes away...it's been that way for a year now and I don't plan on spending too much on this car...it has ~187K, can't last too much longer...but I plan on checking the tranny mounts in the spring. I'm thinking it could also be a bad axle, anyone???

M sister 2002 3.5RL is having this problem and I been hunting this Vibration since I bought the car for my sister. I think we solved this issues but I think and my Acura dealership came up with it could be the Balance, Crown and or Clam shaft they sit behind the motor closer to the firewall. Acura is droping the motor today. I let you know.

I know how fustrating it gets trying to solve a problem when know once can solve it. I still have an issues with my Integra that I have a CEL code 1457. Acura or my shop can not fix it. I had this CEL code since the year 2002.

FOR ALL OF YOU HAVING THIS UGLY VIBRATION PROBLEM:

try following:
-turn off engine and pop up the hood
-disconnect both O2 sensors (the connectors are in front of the cylinder heads on each side)
-start the engine
-MIL will come up (cause O2 sensors are not hooked up), but don't worry. nothing will happen.
-now take the car for a run and check if the vibrations are still there. if not, give me a PM and i will tell you, what the problem is.

This may not be it, but a couple of years ago my '96 RL would shake when the car was in gear, but not moving and my foot on the brake. My kids used to laugh about it. I didn't notice it when driving down the highway or in park. I had the car in for service one time and the guy told me I had a bad coil pack and once cylinder was misfiring because of it. They changed the coil pack and the problem went away, never came back...

vibrations in general have different sources or origins. but i know about one major defect on the RL's engine, which is definitely causing bad vibrations. and they have nothing to do with bad coils, tranny, engine mounts or whatsoever. and i know how to cure it. but unfortunately it costs something. but at the end it is much cheaper than changing parts by accident in an endless search for the cause of this problem.

 that's funny, guys. yeah, i moved to LS400, but still driving the RL till it is sold.

to be honest, i don't know if to write about the solution here, because also acura america might read this info. and save a lot of money, which i spent on finding the source of this problem. and honda europe never gave a damn about my problems. they were ignoring me and my RL totally. they care only about those civics they sell over here. not about their best buy. talking bout customer relationship. so i'm pissed about honda right now and not willing to share any information with them. but i'm willing to help everyone of you as good as i can.
so if you have such problems, and you are sure it has nothing to do with the tranny or your suspension (it's easy to find out: if your engine vibrates in neutral and the car stands still, it must be the engine), send me a PM and i will do my best to give you some hints.
