Can anyone tell me what is happening if I cannot get my car out of park mode?

Will the car start, and does the key turn?

If so, try using the emergency park unlock on the shifter base to see if you can override it. My guess, if you don't hear the solenoid clicking when you apply the brake, is a defective brake light switch.
