I bought a used mdx. I can't get it to pair with my phone. I have hit the voice command button and said phone setup, then nothing. If I hit the button with the phone and face it doesn't beep or do anything. Need help with how to do this.

What kind of phone are you using? If it's an iPhone 6, try a phone with an Android platform before going any further.

More than likely you'll have to replace the HFL unit, but before you spend any money, call HandsFreeLink Customer Service at 1-888-528-7876 to see if they can assist you in pairing your phone. This works about 20% of the time, but it's free so it's worth a shot.

Have your VIN, carrier, phone model, and operating system (OS) available when you call.

Do you know if an iPhone 7 would work is the MDX purely Android-specific?

It should work, however it requires connecting the phone in a different way than Android platform phones. You can check your phone's compatibility here:
