Hello all. I have a 1991 Acura Legend. About a few weeks ago my battery light came on. I cranked the car and a puff of smoke came from the hood. It smelled like wire burning. The car didn't crank that day. The next day the car cranked right up. Shortly after that the battery light came on. I figured that battery was going dead. So I took it to Autozone and had it recharged. The following week the as I was driving the car started loosing power. I took the car back to Autozone to have the alternator and battery checked. The result was the alternator was draining the battery even while the car was not on. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?

That would be a first. And on top of that, I would have no idea how that would work (when you look at how an alternator works). However, a weak alternator won't drain the battery, however it may not supply the amps and voltage needed to charge it. And at the same time, a weak battery over a period of time can weaken the alternator as it will be under more load more frequently and wear prematurely.

However, can an alternator drain the battery? I doubt it as the alternator doesn't really draw power, it produces it. It is something else in the car that is drawing power and/or your battery and/or alternator is becoming weak and will be in need of servicing

Replace the alternator and I'm pretty sure your problems will be alleviated.
