Buying a Used Acura Integra GSR or Type R: Where to Find One?

Hi what's up people, I am new to the forum; I actually just stumbled upon it while doing some research. I am coming from a vw gti, and I would like to purchase a used integra gsr or type r. I am not very computer-inclined but I was wondering where my best bet to purchase a used type R would be from. I noticed one on autotrader for 24k with 34k miles on it. I have also been unable to find a lot of gsr's in my neighborhood (I am from westchester, new york). I hope that this is the right forum to be posting in.
Thanks guys,

Amy

Good luck. Those two will be the hardest type of Integras to find used in good condition.. a lot of tuner-types scoop them up.

Try some Acura dealerships in the area... they're usually good for finding used versions of cars they once sold as new. AutoTrader and eBay are other good places to look, but be careful... there are plenty of scams on both websites. I'd never buy a used car without first checking it out in person and test driving it.

Good luck.

I would call the local acura dealership and put your name on a list for them to call when such a car comes in.. i did that when i was looking for a Legend.

Just have to look around really, Cars.com, beepbeep.com, autotrader.com

Thats all i can suggest.

That price seems really high for a 2000. Blue book (retail) is only $14,100. Granted, it is a limited edition car, but I don't think it's worth that much. That's pretty close to how much a brand new one was.

Yeah all those prices listed are waaaay to high, 25 grand for a Type-R? Even new they didnt cost that much. Stay away from anything priced like that. You should be able to find 95 gsr's for like 5,000 and less.

yea.. 5K is about right for GSR

my cousin got his type R off of e-bay. It was shipped from some little island of japan which cost about 700 usd to ship. he paid 19,000 and it only had 1,200 miles on it. When he got it he had to have it legalized which cost around 3000 after paperwork and work done on the car. If you are looking for a type R with a true JDM engine i would look on e-bay. Good luck, jon

Thanks for the tips guys, for some reason I thought that the R's MSRP was more towards 30k - show's how much I know about cars... Well, looks like I will be driving my vw for a little while longer... also, I am not really up to date on future models; is there anything coming out that will be similar to the R in the future (so I can do something in the meantime)? From Acura or other companys? Thanks dooodes... ...that's really cute

there is a DC5 integra which is the acura RSX over here. The V-tec model over here is the RSX-S (correct me if i am wrong). They run from 8,000 up. I am thinking about upgrading after my teg has bit the dust.

Well, the RSX Type-S is probably the closest thing to the Type-R right now in the Acura lineup. Otherwise, the Mitsubishi Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX are both comparable to the Type-R (more performance, less amenities)... unfortunately both have turbo, while the Type-R was N/A.

bluels you seem to like your DC5 alot. Any ups or downs you might want to tell me about before i sell my jeep for one? Please be truthful with all things. I am trying to get some advice before getting one on problems with engineering and whatnot. Thanks, Jon

I like it alot....i mean coming from an integra it was everything i wanted....the interior is nice (leather), the layout of the car is perfect as far as where the shifter is, and where the radio control are...i dont need to stretch to get to anything......also the 6 speed manual transmission and engine are very nice pieces.....the car is pretty quick, and handles pretty good from the factory....also i like the styling, the oem front and rear lips as well as the side skirts...and also the rims, new headlights and tails, etc. I cant really say too many bad things about it. I mean the only thing i can think of, is that its not super blazingly fast, but also i love honda NA power, so thats why i went with this car, over some american car or a subaru wrx. 8100rpm is music to my ears everytime i hit it....bone stock the car runs like a 15.0 or 14.9 quarter mile. In my personal experiences i was beat by my friends modded wrx (full turboback exhuast, reprogrammed ecu, bigger charge piping, bumped up boost) by a good bit, I tied a mustang 5.0 from the early 90's and i've beaten a few civic si's and the normal honda samples (prelude, integra non vtec)....i have yet to come across a gs-r or type r that wanted to race :p....but i think i could easily beat the gs-r, but the type-r would probably beat me. It would be close tho.....so again the only thing i could say is that its a honda motor, so it doesnt have loads of torque, but hey, they arent built liek that....any specific questions i can answer for you, id be happy to.

I'm back!

Hi guys im back! I was looking over in H-T.com for a nice type R, but I really couldn't find anything that seemed reasonable, and that wasn't heavily modified. However, I did find a certified Type R that is REALLY close to where I live... here is the link
I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me already to help me find this car, but I haven't ever bought a used car or "negotiated" on a price before. Judging from what you guys have told me, their price of 24k does not seem reasonable, but is it diff cause it's from a dealership? What price should I go for? Just need some advice before I pick up the phone....

Also, sjlee, you said ..

is turbo bad, why did you say unfortunately? what is N/A? I am driving in a gti right now which I think is a turbo (my brother told me the T meant turbo). Thanks guys!

Also, you guys are probably wondering why I want a type R - one of my friends took me in a ride once a few years ago in a yellow one, and it was an AMAZING experience...just really loved being in the car and how it drove, and since then, I have not been in a car like it....

Buying a used car from a dealership vs. buying it from a private seller will definitely cost more, but it still should not be as high as what they're asking. Of course, they may be just trying to give a high price, knowing that a serious buyer will talk them down.

If you're trying to come up with a fair price, go to www.kbb.com (Kelly's Blue Book). You can get values (trade-in, retail, and private seller) that'll help you get a feel for what is "fair". Remember, however, if you're dead-set on a Type-R, you may have to pay a little more than it's valued at because of it's limited production numbers, but you should still not be paying the price when the car was new.

Turbo isn't bad... I'm just not a big fan of it. Basically, a turbo-charger will increase power of an engine without sacrificing alot of gas mileage. The downside is that turbos take time to "wind up", thus you have a lag before the extra performance kicks in. In addition, turbos are unreliable.

N/A means normally aspirated... or not using a turbo-charger.

You should go for a ride in a GS-R. It has slightly less performance, but has more standard features and overall has a more comfortable ride for everyday use. In addition, GS-Rs will be easier to find used than Type-Rs and will be less expensive.
