I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me already to help me find this car, but I haven't ever bought a used car or "negotiated" on a price before. Judging from what you guys have told me, their price of 24k does not seem reasonable, but is it diff cause it's from a dealership? What price should I go for? Just need some advice before I pick up the phone....
Also, sjlee, you said ..
is turbo bad, why did you say unfortunately? what is N/A? I am driving in a gti right now which I think is a turbo (my brother told me the T meant turbo). Thanks guys!
Also, you guys are probably wondering why I want a type R - one of my friends took me in a ride once a few years ago in a yellow one, and it was an AMAZING experience...just really loved being in the car and how it drove, and since then, I have not been in a car like it....
Buying a used car from a dealership vs. buying it from a private seller will definitely cost more, but it still should not be as high as what they're asking. Of course, they may be just trying to give a high price, knowing that a serious buyer will talk them down.
If you're trying to come up with a fair price, go to
www.kbb.com (Kelly's Blue Book). You can get values (trade-in, retail, and private seller) that'll help you get a feel for what is "fair". Remember, however, if you're dead-set on a Type-R, you may have to pay a little more than it's valued at because of it's limited production numbers, but you should still not be paying the price when the car was new.
Turbo isn't bad... I'm just not a big fan of it. Basically, a turbo-charger will increase power of an engine without sacrificing alot of gas mileage. The downside is that turbos take time to "wind up", thus you have a lag before the extra performance kicks in. In addition, turbos are unreliable.
N/A means normally aspirated... or not using a turbo-charger.
You should go for a ride in a GS-R. It has slightly less performance, but has more standard features and overall has a more comfortable ride for everyday use. In addition, GS-Rs will be easier to find used than Type-Rs and will be less expensive.
