"clacking" noise when turning

I have a '92 RS HB that has been a great car (100k miles), but starting to require more maintenance than maybe I want to spend on it

The problem now is a "clack-clack-clack" noise coming from the left front when turning in either direction (not when going straignt). There is a clack for every revolution of the wheel

I looked on the left wheel and the rubber cover that protects the joint where the axle connects to the wheel (sorry, I am not that tecnichal in my lingo) is ripped, and seems like it was ripped some time ago, so I assumed the grease was gone and that was causing the clacking.

I took it to the dealer, hoping a little grease and a new rubber cover would solve the problem. They have told me that I need a whole new cover-joint-axle assembly ($540). They say that the cover ripped, the grease was dried/worn off and that irreparable damage was done to the joint. I asked if a little grease and a new cover would help for a few weeks (while I sell the car, which Ive decided to do, replacing it with another acura of course) but they said no

My questions:
a) Has ayone encoutered a similar issue?
b) Would you guess the grease may help? If so, what kind of grease goes in there and how easy it would be to apply it?
c) Do you think there may be possibility for a major problem (e.g., wheel coming off)?
d) How much should it cost to fix something like this?

Yeah, the clicking happened with my 95 right after I got it. The guy had just replaced the boots and it clicked on the driver's side when I turned, which it didn't do when I took the test drive. Anywho, I had the axel replaced and no more clicking. The axel was $150 Canadian plus labor.

My Teg is doing the samething also. But it does it only when i turn left. I think its just the CV joint that needs to be replaced.

Ya, your guy's problem is the cv joints most likely. Go to your local parts store dealers (Napa, Advance, O'reily's, ect). They will be able to order you a refurbished CV joint for your car. Cost is in the ball park of 50$ and it takes 30min to install for the right and 45min to install on the left. So if a shop tells you more thats B.S. I've installed on in my driveway in 30min. Once the boot rips you have to replace the whole Axle (CV) due to dirt ruining the bearing in the joints. So you can't simply replace the boot and pack more grease in there.

Also if you have a GS (SViking) make sure you get the CV joint with the ABS sensor on it, if you don't you will throw a ABS code. aawenlinea you have an RS so it wont mater for you which one you get but it is probably cheaper to get the Non-ABS CV joint. Napa made that mistake with me and gave me a Non-ABS CV joint for my GS.... I WAS PISSED!
