Hello.

I am replacing CV axle on 2010 MDX. Installed new axle and tapped it gently into transmission and it felt like it seated and hit bottom, but it (axle) slides in and out about 2 or 3 inches of play. Is that normal or did I not seat it in far enough? What is the purpose of the retaining clip on the end of the axle? Maybe I didn't get that locked into place?

You sure its not sliding in the joint and not the axle seated in the diff? The joint is made to have in and out play! The spring clip on the inner end of the axle should hold it in the diff allowing the inner and outer joints to slide back and forth and move up and down.
Secondly you should not have to tap in the axle, you should be able to push it in by hand.

it is in and has the correct play, but I drove it and it sounds like a rubbing coinciding with the rotation of the wheel, almost like the brake is rubbing.
