It covers the xenon capsule so it doesn’t blind other drivers. You can use either bulb in either headlight and they would work perfectly. A D2S bulb in a D2R headlight would look brighter
staring at it but would make the same light on the floor. D2R bulbs are for reflector headlights like Acura TL’s, RL’s, Lexus LS430's, MB S500's and the D2S is for projector headlights like
Audi A4's or A6's, BMW X5, Honda S2000.

Why would you guys need to know this anyway? If you buy an H4 conversion kit you dont need to know about D2S or D2R. H4 style HID bulbs are all the same. They have a plate on the bottom so they dont glare too much.

Thats wierd. H4 style bulbs shouldn't be D2R or D2S. They are H4. I wouldn't worry about it as long as they're not D2S bulbs modified to fit an H4 headlight. Find out before you buy them. It can be done, trust me, I've done it before with Philips D2R's.
