Has anyone tried to backup the Nav DVD disc?

Has anyone tried to see what files / size of the Nav DVD is?

More importantly, can someone confirm if that thing can be backed up to a DVD-R and be used??

DVD burners are getting cheaper and cheaper.. ;)

Good Q. It's an alpine unit...I believe it reads standard DVD format...so then yes.

some people on clublexus are attempting to do this same thing with the lexus navi disc.... i would think that it is possible if the disk is a dvd 5 or under 4.7GB.... but if is over 4.7GB you would not be able to back up the disk you would have to rip it and then split the file to fit it on two disk... and doing this would require you to have to switch the disc when viewing certian data....... i have a dvd burner and looking for someone in the jax/fl area that has navi and wants to test this out....

Hey Eric,

If it's possible, I'll be the first one to get the DVD software from ya. I really need up-date on my NAV. :D
looking into it a bit more..

and as shawhite pointed out.. the Acura one is a large density one containing about 8GB worth..

where most DVD-R discs are only 4.7GB.. :(

But as I have never seen what the tracks are on the DVD Navi disc, it almost seems to me that you should be able to load only a portion of it onto one disc.. most times software will be the program itself and then a seperate file for the database.. in this case, the map data..

Nothing is hack proof. ;)

Also, since this is an Alpine Navigation unit, and the aftermarket ones seem to be a bit more advanced than the OEM one, doesn't it seem possible to get updated map info on an Alpine Disc rather than wait for Acura to come out with one??
I have all that is needed is a dual layer DVD burner, 1 dual layer blank DVD-R, Any DVD, nero 7 or newer. If anyone has the newest black DVD let me know and I can help you make a free back-up.
