You will have to remove the carpet inside the trunk also because the "A" on the back trunk has two plugs that go into the body of the trunk. Unless you plan on doing body work I wouldn't suggest removing it.
The plugs are not in behind the lid, you don't have to remove the inside. They push in to secure the pins from the outside, similar to drywall mollies.
If you wish to remove the glue as well, the easiest thing to do is to use a hair dryer to heat it up (so it doesn't stick so much) and Goo Gone to wipe it away.
