I have a shop over here...I hooked one of the guys up and he's offering me $120 for everything tinted but the front windshield, and another $75 for the front windshield. If I do the windshield later, that $120 is too cheap to not pass up (IMHO). This quote is for 15% Llumar, lifetime warranty on tint and work.

So a few Q's. First, how much does a shop usually charge for tint?

Second, I want dark tint, dark enough not to be able to see me very well and to block out heat, but not so dark I lose any visibility at night for driving (I need it for the crazy Austin drivers)...so I was thinking 15%...it's darker than 30, lighter than 5...just in the middle. Do you guys that have 15% think you lose any visibility at night? And is it dark enough in the daytime so that you can't totally make the person out and so that it shield out heat?

Third, should I do the rear windshield a different % than the windows? like 15% windows, 30% rear windshield? or will that look really stupid to have a rear windshield that's twice as light as the windows? Again, concerned about visibility. Anyone with either scenario, 15% wraparound, or a dark tint on windows and lighter on rear windshield post pics please.

Fourth...what should I do about the front windshield? 40%? 50%? I want it done because I'm in TX, and believe me I need heat kept out. So ok guys...your turn...need lots of pics, advice, etc...steering me in one direction by Monday :D

Around here, they charge about $180. We found someone here that will do it for $150 legally, $180 for darker, illegal 20% tint. So I paid $180 for 35% on front sides, and 20% on rear doors and back window.

Visibility is fine with 20% on back. Darker tint on the sides than the back is totally ghey. You will get used to the darker tint after a few days and it won't bother you at all.

120 is what i paid for my tint 30% on the front windows and 20% on the back and rear windshield. Thats a good price I'd go for it, I've see 15 on a car and its just right in my opinion.

for $120? is the tint metalized? I have 38% Llumar Pure Titanium on my TLS. I paid $230 + $50 for a vinyl visor to cover the dot matix in the rear.

On my old Eclipse I had origianally put 18% on the back w/38% on the sides.
1. I hated the two different shades. It didn't look right.
2. 18% Llumar PT was way too dark for me on the back. I couldn't see anything very well at night.

I had the shop rip that tint out and replace it w/38%.

For the cheap price, you could just have them do it the way you want, if you don't like it, spend a little more to have it redone.

IMO, I don't like 2 different shades. Uniform all the way around is the best.

I don't know about Texas, but in Mass, you can only go 35% for tint. I use to have 20% and got nailed with a $250 dollar ticket.

That price they quoted you was really good...in Mass it's normally 200ish.

As for the heat, tint makes it hotter in the summer...remember, the tint itself is black, which gets hotter than the clear window. The only thing tint helps with is UV rays.

If you can do the front windshield in one piece, than go for it. If they have to do a couple of strips, then I might nix it.....again, assuming this is legal (Mass sucks with tint laws)

Hope this helps

Hey Alex,

I've got the info about the bulbs. I think it's better to send MO to him since you want to pay CASH. Stop by my shop if you have a time.

I do remember and it looks good.

To everyone else...a serious THANK YOU! I think I'm going with 15% on all 4 windows...I am still however worried about the back. So to bring you all back to topic...just answer this one question...and don't answer it in a "that'd look phat damn get it mang" kind of way ;). Although this car will be for shows...it's also a daily driver...I am a big stickler about visibility. At the same time I don't want to scare you guys away from saying "Yeah 15% would be fine." I already know I'm doing 50% on the front...just want to take the edge off...not tint it. So

Q: Is 15% too dark for my rear windshield? If so, should I get 30% rear and 15% windows, or 30% all around?

And also...I know about the laws but I don't really give a damn :). I usually have my windows down anyway...heh.

I know there's gonna be alot of opinions about what % of tint is too dark for driving. I personally think anything darker than 30% becomes dangerous at night.

Frankly its gonna be a trade off that you will have to decide for yourself. If your car is a daily driver, you need to take that into account.

And not to sound like I am raining on anyone's parade but tinting the front windshield is ridiculous IMO. I dont think anyone should ever risk safety for the sake of making a car look "cooler". I would not want to be the one that gets into an accident and then has to explain why he has tint on the front window. I dont think any states permit tinting the front. Your insurance carrier might not even cover the loss in such an event if its determined that a lack of visibility contibuted the the crash, and if you've hit other cars and there are injuries, you wont be driving even a Yugo until you are age 85, unless you have fistfulls of cash stored away to pay for the lawsuits that your insurance wont cover.
