The navi map on my 2017 RDX shows the street I am driving on but not upcoming cross streets. Is it possible to program the navi system to show upcoming cross streets at the top of the screen, such as it does on my Garmin GPS?

Is it possible that you have the bar at the top of the screen adjusted too far out to show the side streets. Try zooming it in a click at a time and see what you get. I have the same RDX and mine shows the side streets.
