A PCM - or Powertrain Control Module - monitors all aspects of the vehicle. You may also know of it as the OBD or OnBoard Diagnostics. I believe the modern TL is OBDII or OBDIII - can't remember.
I believe the PCM is also in charge of commanding the shifts - so yeah, it could absolutely be the fault. I recall several CLs on their 3rd tranny that when the PCM was replaced never had a problem with the tranny again.
