How do you know if its the SRS module or something else?

Does the SRS system still work after this procedure? How long does the light stay off?? I'm thinking of buying a 99 RL with the SRS light on. These Yuppie types are crazy on values up here in the NW. They are at 10,000 for 97 and 98 models and 12+ on 99's. But I like this 99 I found except for the SRS light on, any ideas or expeience with the dealer fixing the srs light under warranty?

Resetting the light doesn't fix the problem. If the problem is still there the light will return.

As far as I know the dealer will repair any seat belt problem but there are plenty of other components in the SRS system. I would suggest you try and read the code before you buy it to determine what is wrong. You can then get a quote on fixing it and decide if you still want to buy it.

It may be something minor that you can fix yourself and use it as a bargaining chip to lower the price.

Resetting Procedure works for 2002 as well

SRS light by itself is not error code related. If this light is on in combination with any other warning light then you read codes. By itself it can come up due to the curent draw drop or battery voltage drop or faulty component of the SRS (Supplemental Restrain System). Reset is easy and can be done with paper clip, following the references from Imagiansian Boy at the beginning of this thread. After you reset light, if you have a problem it will come back on after about 10 ignition start cycles, or you will not be able to reset it if problem is there. I would start with simple reset and monitor the car for 10-12 engine start cycles. If it is back on, then it may be a problem. This is good thing to do before dealer starts replacing your SRS modules one by one.:beerchug:

The SRS light does create an error code that you can self diagnose or use a tester to read. It has nothing to do with the engine codes. It is easier to reset it and see if it comes back but once it comes back you can still diagnose the problem on your own.

To read the code without a tester you
1. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds.
2. Put a jumper in the connector under the glove box
3. Turn the ignition to on, the SRS light comes on for about 6 seconds and then it will go off.
4. The SRS light will then flash the code.

The system can store up to 3 codes which it will flash in succession. It will flash a main code and a sub code for each stored code which you then can
use to further troubleshoot the problem.

This worked like a charm on my 2001 RL. Very easy to just look under the dashboard and find the plug with these directions -- no need to actually remove the carpeted panel underneath the steering wheel. I used a small jumper wire, but a paperclip would have been easy too.

INCREDIBLE! I just cleared my SRS also! I used a paperclip, and pulled the kneeboard down (6 metal and unbreakable clips) that hold it in place. Door was open, seatbelt not fastened. Did not work first time, but 2nd time it CLEARED! This board is AWESOME! Thanks to everyone!!! My 2002 RL couldn't be happier!

Works great - my SRS light came on when my battery died. Took 15 mins to find & read this post, less than 5 mins to reset with a paperclip. I am not a mechanic or technician.

The tip to remove the knee bolster (carpeted panel below the steering wheel) was great - only needed to pop off the left most 4 clips to access the yellow cable. I rewrote the detailed steps on scratch pad as follows:

1- ignition off
2- jumper yellow cable with a paper clip
3- ign on to Pos II
4- Un-jump after SRS light comes on then goes off
5- Light goes back on - rejump quickly
6- Light goes off again - unjump quickly
7- SRS light blinks 2x
8- turn ign off and waith 10 secs

Had to try 3 times because I could not jumper step 5 quickly enough as my paperclip was a bit stiff. I wrapped a piece of elec tape around the clip as a precaution - not sure if that helped at all.

Thanks to all who made the original posts.
