Mercedes-Benz is upping the luxury performance car stakes with the introduction of its 2003 S600 flagship powered by a version of the recently unveiled Maybach’s twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V12.

By ditching the existing model’s 6.0-liter V12 for a de-tuned version of the Maybach engine, S600 power increases by 126 horsepower to 493 hp, with torque up by 199 lb-ft to 590 lb-ft. That’s enough, according to Mercedes-Benz, to lower the S600 0-62 mph time from 6.3 seconds to just 4.8 seconds. Top speed remains governed to 155mph, though the S600 is geared to top 180 mph without electronic intervention, according to Mercedes sources. If rumors are correct, look for the Maybach-based powerplant in the SL as well.

The new German sedan spearheads a heavily upgraded 2003 S-Class lineup due to reach the United States later this year. With increased competition from the new Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Volkswagen Phaeton and upcoming Jaguar XJ replacement, Mercedes-Benz has pulled out all stops to ensure the S-Class remains at the top of its class. Visual changes are slight, but a lot of work has been gone on beneath the four-year-old car’s bodywork in a bid to extend its appeal.

For the first time, the S-Class receives a four-wheel-drive option. Available on the S350 and S500, it is similar to the 4matic system used by selected C- and E-Class models.

Subtle styling revisions include clear lens headlamps with bi-xenon projectors, a modified front spoiler, a lightly reworked grille, new exterior mirror housings and altered taillight graphics.

Inside, there are higher grade materials for the dashboard, redesigned switchgear and upgraded seats. In the future, all S-Class models will be fitted with Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND control system, with a 6.5-inch color screen linking the sound system and trip computer with high-cost options like satellite navigation and telephone.

A further addition to the lineup is the updated S55 AMG Kompressor. It swaps its naturally-aspirated 5.4-liter V8 for a supercharged 493-hp version of the same engine—as revealed in the SL55 AMG Kompressor late last year. Further down the range, a 242-hp 3.7-liter V6 replaces the S-Class’s popular 3.2-liter V6.

I still think I'd go for the Bentley Coupe instead.

600+ lb-ft TQ!

"Over the past twenty years, Bentley has been rediscovering its own identity and distinctive spirit, all the while nurturing the dream of developing a Grand Touring coupé for a new generation.

Under the bonnet lives a 6-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 formation Bentley engine with a power output in excess of 500bhp. But power is nothing without the torque to back it up and while the exact torque peak of the new engine must remain a secret for now it will come as no surprise to those familiar with the Bentley approach to power delivery that it will be more than adequate for the job.

Its power will be fed through a new, paddle operated six speed automatic gearbox and will be delivered to the road via all wheel drive - a first in Bentley's history.

With the final design signed off, work is now concentrated on evaluation and durability testing in some of the most inhospitable regions on the planet. From the frozen wastes of the Arctic Circle to the life-threatening heat of the hottest deserts on earth, GT coupés are being subjected to challenges they could never conceivably face in a customer's hand. The result will be one of the quickest, most thoroughly developed and advanced cars ever offered for sale to the general public by a car manufacturer."

from which car?
damn, the new s class would be bad ass.... no offence, but i would get the s600 without a doubt over the bentley. the s-class looks so much better imho, and i just have a feeling that the mb will have much better quality.

and 4.8 sec from 0-62, that's stupidly fast. that's even faster than the current m5.... 500hp and 600lb-ft, what can i say... my jaws are on the floor....
Their are just so many phenomenal "super sedans" out now. What a great time to be a car enthusiast, blown V12's on factory street cars!!!

the Benz. I'd piss on a Bentley.
Its about time benz did that! i mean the Old SL 600's engine (R129 1990-2002) could be tunned by RENNtech to well over 550bhp and top out at 202 mph. And with the new generation the horsepower rating on the 600 dropped from 389 to 360ish i dont remember off the top of my head. But to compete with the new 760Li's 444hp that was a smart move to drop in the maybach engine. And yea in my opinion i think bentlys are a waste of money compared to the benz. Its just over kill. More expensive doesnt mean better.....
i think the horsepower war needs to end and spend that money to lobby to increase the fre*king speed limit. hell i can't drive 5 miles without breaking the limit zillion times. it's just 2 ridiculous..
