tire size and speedo question???

Yes, it would be out of whack (is that the technical term?) 
Check out the following calculator:

I just did it (assuming stock 215/50/17 size) and that size would show your speedometer at 5.6% too fast - that's really pretty big. Plus, you'll be racking up miles 5.6% faster than you really are.
225/45/17 would be a better choice. Try putting different sizes into the calculator to see what matches most closely.

as gold said, go with a 45 profile, any smaller than that and it would look strange on a 17inch wheel
