White Rabbit,

I have a 2007 TL with shift problems Calnew described on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. I replaced the three pressure switches and the car worked fine for 1,000 miles. The switches were less than 125 dollars out of a dealer near Atlanta, Georgia.

The car now seems to shift into 1st and 2nd far different than when new. The service manual identifies clutch pressure control solenoids, but I have not proven these are the culprits. There is pressure test the dealer is supposed to run in order to trouble shoot. The Acura dealer here has been good so far.

I would really hope someone has posted up the facts about our transmission, or maybe it is fairly new.

3x3 flush @ 36k ***transmission fluid cooler is highly recommended
2 sensors, need to be replaced every 75-100k

You will have no problems what so ever. Just learn about the sensors, what they do for the transmission, and you will understand exactly why the trans does fail.
I have had the very same issue with a load of Honda's, and that was the fix to those; however this is a common issue for 3g TL owners who do not maintain the two steps above. Those two are the very problem ,Which than will eventually develop to a destroyed trans if you maintain driving while it is not shifting properly. *NEVER TOO LATE IF YOU JUST STARTED EXPERIENCING IT, Time to Act, hopefully it is not too late.

Hey I'm having the same problems as you. I wish all these people on here would stop bullshitting and either give you an answer and stop argueing on your forum. Anyways back to the main topic, I have a 2004 TL 5AT aswell, with 118k exact miles. It only happens in the morning when its cold, or when its cold in general outside. I start it up, then it goes into reverse fine, but then when I put it into Drive, it takes about 2-5 seconds to catch. Because I can sit their in drive revving it, and doesnt go anywhere and the RPM's shoot up, then it finally catches and I can drive it. It doesn't do it once the engine is warmed up tho, and the funny thing is all of my fluids are topped off. So it's not a fluid problem.

THIS IS THE NEVER ENDING ISSUE WITH HONDA'S. Manufacturer or the Transmission has SPECIFICALLY TOLD EVERYONE.

Type S - 3 Switches
Base - 2 Switches

ALL MUST BE REPLACED.

IF YOU DO NOT REPLACE IT, IT DOESN'T ALLOW THE TRANS TO SHIFT PROPERLY, SEND THE ENGINE'S POWER/ENERGY INTO THE TRANS and not to the wheels.

What Does Energy Create? Heat as it transforms.

Therefore your torque converter begins to get extremely hot, and that is what dries your transmission.

IT HAPPENS WHEN IT IS COLD BECAUSE THE SOLENOID IS GETTING STUCK. Heat generally helps the car stop the tacking..

IT IS BEST, once your experience these problems, PRIMARILY on the first run of the day; warm the car up for 10 MINS.

THE ENGINE GETS HOT WAY FASTER THAN THE TRANS DOES; and now you need it to be hot, so you should wait 7-10 mins minimum.

*******************NOW the only time your transmission BREAKS, is because you begin to experience this; and you DO NOT CHANGE the sensors. Now you got yourself a hefty ass problem that will be costly. OP Burt explained.... THE CAR RUNS EVEN SWEETER.****************

The next option you have is to remove it from the trans, and have it PnP, with the same results; but if you do not have the equipment readily available to PnP, this is an extremely long story. Best to just buy the sensors.

I changed the sensors in my TL-S at 87k, I only had the car for about 2 weeks when I did change them so I am not so sure how much they helped, but the car did drive a little smoother, and the sport shift downshifts felt smoother as well.

Now I am chasing motor mount gremlins smh

i'm a little confused by some of these posts...

exactly what are you referring to by "sensor" and is this different from the "pressure switch"?

and it seems it can affect the 07/08 TL as well, even those were supposed to have better transmissions, right?

can someone put down a bullet list of all the things they needed to do (from experience) to tackle this issue? thanks!

Well my friend, you can just call acura and ask them yourself. They would be glad to inform you of everything that needs to be changed; other than that I dont think any of that is a concern to you.

Yes, actually your car is much more effected than the type S model, our cars have an oil filter; I dont think yours comes with it. Type-S is a modified RL Trans, even though it is the same block. Plus, a few more difference.

Just read my previous posts on this thread; it explains everything pretty much down to the detail. Take it like this, it's something that is going to trash your transmission, might as well change it before that happens; because that is exactly what it is going to cause if you do not change it. Unless you drive like a less-than normal person/grandma/soccer mom

2005 Acura TL Tranny Slipping - HELP!

I own a 2005 Acura TL with 85K miles. I recently started having tranny problems where the tranny seems to go into neutral at about 45+ mph. I almost got in a car accident merging into the freeway. The dealer said that the 2005 was modified to fix the tranny issues that previous TL models were encountering. They want to charge me $4500 to replace the tranny. Anyone else had this problem? I'm trying to determine if the Acura or the dealer can pay some of that cost since it's a recurring problem. Any advice out there?

yes problems with my 05 -AT trans started with replacing the speed sensor last summer (speedo went out and trans would not shift properly). Last month the trans finally shit the bed and I barely made it home taking my daughter from school. No warranty so cost me 4k from a local trans shop. At least he gave me a 2 year warranty

If the sensors aren't changed, after feeling the issue, the transmission is going to suffer; followed by your pocket

they say every 75-100k mi
Curious whether or not this would apply to manual trannys. My '04 has 67,000 miles and started to become notchy perhaps 20,000 miles ago. I attributed it to my wife's habit of downshifting, which I had to convince her was hard on the tranny and the synchros. Perhaps this is a common issue.

Mine doesn't pop out, but there a few times that I feel it doesn't quite engage the gear and I'm not sure if it is actually in gear. Can't recall the exact gear in which that happens, but it seems that it is second.

Tranny failure(s)

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with the Transmission on the 3rd Gen TL. Please let us know.
Had an 03 TL Type-S. Tranny failed and was replaced under warranty. At end of 05, looking for a new car, I loved the 3rd gen TL but had qualms about buying another TL. Dealer convinced me that it had been corrected, so I bought an 06 TL. At 87K miles, tranny blew and it cost over 5 grand to replace. Anybody anxious to buy a TLX with 9-speed tranny?

I'm sorry, I'm new and have no idea how to post, but I'm having a problem with my 04 TL. Just changed the clutch and the mechanic says I have a bad transmission but I don't want to believe it, I tell him it might be the gas since it's an empty tank, but he says no, they won't let me try to drive it they say I might put pressure onto my new clutch, but the car is in the lift and I put in first and it goes but the vsa lights comes on and the car slips,

Yes, Honda doesn't know how to properly make manual transmission.

I've heard that 3rd gear has problems 8n Honda and acura models from the early 90 to the last manual models they made. I personally do have a problem with 3rd gear the synchro is gone and it was nothing I did.

I love my acura, it's a great car and it lasts, all cars have their problems somewhere.

I drove not using 3rd for fear it would mess things up 8 worse cause it grinder pretty bad but my mechanic put some granny fluid on it and I've been using it. Not like it can fuck up 3rd gear worse. Tranny work is expensive. Nine only messed up at 180,000 miles though so that's much further along, also an 04 not rebuilt.

Im asking about the 5speed Auto. To me when the vehicle shifts it pulls alittle much, or sometimes it feels like it doesn't know if it wants to go into gear or not...it might be me being crazy, just wasn't sure if im the only one it is happening too.
You're not crazy. Mine is doing that also. Just bought it from a guy who didn't keep up on maintenance. I've already put 1200.00 in for motor maintenance, getting ready to put new rotors on then change tranny fluid and filter and replace 3rd and 4th pressure switches. Oh, had to put new battery cables on as well. Sigh.
