Hi all,

My front windshield has a small crack in it, apparently from a stone, which now is starting to run down the length of the window. Does anyone have any experience with replacing the windshield in an RL? Specifically, I'm wondering how much I can expect this to cost me (note: insurance deductible is $500). Also, is this something the dealership can do, or would I be better off going elsewhere, such as a glass service?

Thanks.

yes, i also have had a rock smack against the top of my 97 RL's windshield... the crack is about the size of a half dollar piece and has not spread thus far. At the local Walmart they sell some sort of FIX-A- CRACK... supposedly you apply this remedy with this fancy sunction cup device... Does that stuff really do the trick?

According to the before and after pics on the back of the box.. it should work miracles...

thanks.

I used the walmart fix it kit on my truck. Its supposed to work on small star cracks. It says it'll make it invisible and look brand new, thats a joke. It does however seal the crack and prevent water from getting in it. This is important because if any moisture gets in and freezes, the crack will spread. If its a small crack that isnt in your line of sight I'd use the fix it kit.

Hit your windshield with a baseball bat and then pour tar on it. Just be sure to wipe off the excess tar. The bat should help make the cracks large enough for the tar to flow into.

Buy a new windshield man...When you have a crack that has already "spider-webbed" it is not recommended that you try to fill it. I would let it go until you have a big-ass crack and then buy a new windshield.

A local auto glass place quoted me $350 for parts and labor to replace the front windshield. I'm going to do it, as I don't want the crack to get any worse, and it's an eye sore. I'm sure that some of the "quick fix" products out there work ok, but I probably wouldn't view them as a long term solution. Anyway, thanks for the info.

me too!

My 97 RL has 2 or 3 "bullet hole" cracks over the years, but finally got the crack that has spread like a cancer. Strated at 2 inches and is now over 2 feet.

Called the local body shops for good windshield replacement company references. Best price was $340.

This after $1500 to replace ABS system.

ABS

The ABS died a classic death. Everytime the car started, it would buzz loudly, which the kids thought was funny. and I did too. It was leaking fluid, and the buzzing was the air going through the system.

New ABS system about $1K, and labor the rest
